Every morning I open the newspaper there is this write up of the bomb blast trial and the accused being awarded sentences. For the disruption and devastation caused in the lives of those innocent unwary, unsuspecting victims near and dear ones , for whom the loss of a life meant a loss of livelihood, for others who suffered a loss of a limb means not living a quality life but a painful way of going through the grinds of day to day existance, wishing why God spared me to suffer in this way with thoughts of Wish I had died than to suffer in this manner, for others the constant struggle of trying to come to terms with the mental trauma every time they enter or see a train. The list is not exhaustive but indicative of what the victims survivors have gone and are constantly going through their lives, most importantly for no fault of theirs. These incidents highlight the facts that our gathering of intelligence to prempt this or such incidents is sadly lacking or maybe there was no political will to act in a timely manner. Whatever the reasons justice finally prevailed, some were awarded the death sentence, others varying degrees of imprisonment. I am personally against the death penalty as it is an easy way out for the perpetrator,he should be awarded the maximum punishment with hard labour, so he lives his entire life trying to make amends for his crimes against mankind, but again money can and does buy a lot of things and as long as a person is alive and has the money and backing he will not leave any stone unturned to obtain relief in every possible way, from trying to reduce his sentence to getting of scot free with a presidential pardon or if not convert the barracks into a five star resort where every need is taken care off and the criminal can lead a life of comfort. In such a scenario I feel that the death penalty is the best as it gets rid of the perpetrator and his ability to influence others to his way of life and also sends a strong message to the terrorists as to what can be expected from India.

Some years ago an MLC walked into a heavily guarded government building to prove his point that he can bypass security with ease, secondly it was to show that guns are freely and easily available in Mumbai. It was no big deal as it is a well known fact that if you have the money you can buy any and every thing under the sun, only in this case the gun being unlicensed procuring it would not be an easy task for a comman man even if he was filthy rich, he would need to have the right contacts. Now a guy like Sanjay Dutt could do it with ease as he had the money and the contacts and that is precisely what he did. Instead of asking for police protection or a licensed gun for his personal safety he went about contacting his underworld friends for weapons ,unfortunately the timing was wrong, it was during the riots where hundreds of innocent people lost their lives ,because of such people Sunjay was in contact with. Instead of trying to destroy evidence , If Sanjay had exercised the option to go to the Police maybe further carnage could be saved what a selfish attitude to think only about himself and his sisters while Mumbai was burning. A role model to the youth of today. His family was not made accessory to the fact by trying to ascertain whether they also had prior knowledge about what had transpired in the house,In the circumstances he should have gone the TADA way with a life sentence but the law was merciful for convicting him under the arms act and sentencing him for only six years was an act of mercy which he and his colleagues in the film Industry fails to appretiate. Today the Film Industry is backing him not because of any special love for him but more because of the crores of rupees invested in the movies starring Sanjay and yet to be released.

Instead of involving the poor subordinate staff who wouldnt care to go to an extent of protesting if an actor is in jail or retires, because they always get the left overs while the actors take the cream , as long as they get their daily bread they are happy. so instead of supporting him with a signature campaign the better way would be for his sister to accept moral responsibility by resigning from her position and along with his close family and so called very close friends who have invested in him to petition the court to allow each one of them to share one year minimum of his prison term so that they can give him support by being really there with him in experiencing the rigours of prison and sharing the trauma he is justly going through and getting to know and become aware of what his actions has done to fellow human beings ,society and the country.

HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY
How can we find true friendship in this often phony, temporary, materialistic world? I wondered ,Do we know what friendship really means,Is it just wishing once a year or means something much more than that. Friendship involves recognition or familiarity with another’s personality.A deep insight within, Friends often share likes and dislikes, interests, ambitions, pursuits, and passion.

How can we recognize potential friendship? Signs include a mutual desire for companionship and perhaps a common bond of some kind. Beyond that, genuine friendship involves a shared sense of caring and concern, a desire to see one another grow and develop, and a hope for each other to succeed in all aspects of life. With the motto of by helping you I am helping myself directly or indirectly to grow into a better person, and thereby lay the foundation to extend my help to other unknown people, strangers who could one day be ‘ potential friends.’ True friendship involves action: doing something for someone else while expecting nothing in return; sharing thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or negative criticism, receptive to their ideas no matter how weird or crazy they may seem, even though we may tend to disagree at times we would never be rude or hurtful in words, thoughts, or deeds to a friend.

True friendship involves relationship, ie: being able to relate to one another Those mutual attributes we mentioned above become the foundation in which recognition transpires into relationship. Many people say, “Oh, he’s a good friend of mine,” yet they never make the effort to spend time with that “good friend.” to get to know him better, Every time they introduce even casual acquaintances they say the same thing , ‘ oh he/she is a good friend of mine’ Friendship takes time: time to get to know each other, time to build shared memories, time to invest in each other’s growth.

Trust is essential to true friendship. We all need someone with whom we can share our lives, our feelings, emotions, our thoughts, fears, loneliness, apprehensions, and frustrations. We need someone to share our joys happiness too. We need to be able to share our deepest secrets with someone, without worrying that those secrets will end up on the Internet the next day! or be a topic of common gossip.Failing to be trustworthy with those intimate secrets can destroy a friendship in a hurry. Faithfulness and loyalty are key to true friendship. Without them, we often feel betrayed, left out, and lonely. In true friendship, there is no backbiting, no negative thoughts, no turning away, only forgiveness no matter how hard and difficult it may be.One always has to keep in mind that the tongue is so small and has no bone, but has caused major wars among neighbours, friends, relatives, societies, communities and even nations have not been spared.

True friendship requires certain accountability factors. Real friends encourage one another and forgive one another where there has been an offense. Genuine friendship supports during times of struggle. Friends are dependable. In true friendship, unconditional love develops. We love our friends no matter what and we always want the best for our friends.

We may have many good friends or only one, we need to choose wisely, cultivate the friendship with fervour, build up a rapport with them, it could be your parents, your siblings , your peers, teachers,or other elders,as long as they are well meaning and do have the potential of being good friends to others, then why not you..?

I am 62 years of age sound in body and mind,of late i have been undergoing tremendous stress and due to this have developed diabetes, thats what my doctor says. My uncle had a shop in a mill and since the business was flourishing he needed someone reliable, honest, dependable,so he asked my father to let me come to mumbai from my native place in punjab to assist him. Well i was in school barely sixteen but eager to earn for my self and my father permitted me so with my parents blessings I came to mumbai. Life was good, I had a good job ,I lived in an rental apartment very spacious one bed hall kitchen, self contained. Compared to my salary the rent was measly just a few rupees. slowly as the business improved so did my salary I managed to buy a second hand car, working with my uncle assisting him in his business keeping late hours, but doing reasonably well , so after some time my parents started receiving many proposals chose a girl, not much educated but loving and homily was the citeria. I was thirty she was twenty, quite normal for an age difference of 10 years in the good old days.My place of residence being quite close to where I worked, lived at Khar and worked at Lalbaug I never felt the need to ever move from a rental apartment to an ownership one.God blessed us with two sons within a span of a year the first was born and within two years the second son,our joys knew no bounds, we had two strong pillars .

26th july 2005 will go down in the annals of history becauce it rained so hard and so fast that the administration was paralysed. So many people lost their lives and many more lost all their belongings and life was a one big struggle trying to get back to normalcy.help came in from unexpected quarters as people divided by leaders on caste, creed and religion, at other times , all came together to help the unfortunate, showing acts of kindness , brotherhood and exemplary courage in risking their lives to save other strangers ,some of them lost ther lives in the bargain.

A sum of rs.5000 was given to people poor and rich alike some of them suffered huge losses and the amount so given was more an insult to the injury caused. For some it was better than nothing ,for others it was disbursing the money without proper verification of documents to the wrong people and the affected getting nothing.I thought in India the value of life is worth just rs.5000minimum to rs.50000.maximum on an average about $1200/-a cost of a cockatel in the states would maybe cost more.If life is valued so cheaply than why not allow people to end it if they so desire, why not allow guys to ride bikes and travel in comfort without wearing cumbersome helmets, let them zoom and just go boom. But then it does not happen that way laws are necessary so that we get an opportunity to break them and the dishonest officials get to line their pockets while the honest ones fill up the government coffers (which are empty for the purpose of election funding) by diligently implementing them. I dont know how so many police inclusive of officers can be recruited in the force if their eye sight is weak.i remember an incidentthere was a check for guys without helmets,i was not wearing mine but had it on the bike, the guy stopped me and fined rs.100/- and guess what instead of giving me a receipt saying not wearing a helmet the charges were w/o helmet,he just could not see the helmet and said he has to charge because of cameras installed, what does the cameras see i wonder.

Coming back to the floods, every one blamed the poor mithi river for being narrowed over the years while the police, bmc and other concerned authorities were snoring during duty hours, dont be surprised its part of their job to sleep on duty or have some eye sight problem as i mentioned earlier in the helmet issue. Some times they are overly enthusiastic in doing their duty and catch couples at bandstand on the rocks or the promenade, without any complaints, moral policing you know at other times they simply say without a formal complaint we cant do a thing and the best part is even their top bosses say the same., which means no complaints no official policing.

There was a big shake up as the administration, the babus, the politicians made all sorts of promises to see that such an incident like the floods never occurs again. Then came 2007 and the same thing happened all over again, only the severity was less as the rains decided to give us a respite.but the fear was in the minds of the people and voiced openly no trust in the administration, mumbaikars live in fear yet the PM sitting in the safety of his office surround by security calls mumbaikars a brave lot ,because with all that happens the floods, the bombings,we still dare to venture out, do we have a choice

A church wedding is not acknowledged by the government as valid, they insist that it is mandatory to have a civil marriage as per law. Even then the church tries to run a pararell government and is not willing to take up this issue with the authorities and solve the plight of catholics who have to please two masters . One the church who uses its religious authority without legal sanctity and two the govt who gives marriage the legal sanctity. I n the bargain the poor couple is the suffer who has to participate in a wasteful exercise of time and money for the whims and fancies in performing rituals not accepted by the Govt. An unwarranted duplication of events in the name of religion and God.

The only thing goodabout a church marriage is that they have a water tight system in place where in you cant get married for the second time without the church authorities knowledge and consent, wherein a govt marriage there is no cross verification by authorities to find outif youve been married before

The police have done such an outstanding job, of investigating crime in the city of Mumbai that the Dy. C.M. Mr. R.R.Patil said thay they deserve a pay hike.We should all agree with the Honble Minister. How can you expect a policeman to work 12 hours shift , many a times without weekly offs , live on vadapav as his meal, and the paltry salary the government has been paying them , how can they make ends meet, they to have a family to support.

It suddenly struck me that they are not a bad lot, maybe their jobs require them to act bad so that they can relate to the baddies, and solve crimes, and in the bargain if they happen to treat every one as criminals we should not make a hue and cry about it.

Some times when they are caught for curruption,or rape or delay in doing their duties or some other offence we fail to realize that they are poorly paid,or take into consideration their long hours of duty, without weekly offs, the stress they have to go through and at once are ready to criticize them , people tell me that maybe they do not know the hardships and their salary prior to joining the force, and as such are not to be blamed.

The pressure the police face from their bosses, the politicians and the media sometimes compell them to resort to unethical means to solve crimes,as a judge apprised the new police commissioner of Mumbai Mr. Dhanajay Jadhav by sending him an order of the judgement, of implicating the innocent in a murder case, even when the identity of the deceased is not confirmed but then this is an isolated case and need not reflect on the police force.

The law says innocent unless proved guilty, and people say this should be applicable not only to the judiciary but also the police ,but it is not feasible or practicable where investigations are concerned I sincerely hope that the proposed pay hike will reduce if not eradicate corruption andmake them better human beings.

Many people have laid down their lives for the freedom of this country called India, dreamed to make this a better place. Unfortunately you see the same poverty , unemployment, no shelter, no clothing , the promises made by the ruling government made prior to elections time and time again never being fulfilled ,even then the people live in hope that someday things will improve,I often wonder what a price we have to pay to be free ,and then I sometimes wonder what is the meaning of freedom, are we really free,if given a choice of being free and starving or a slave with a full belly what would we choose, being free fills the politicians belly being slaves fill our bellies what do I do, then again I think what exactly is this freedom I am talking about,I am governed and controlled and regulated by the government and their policies,by arrogant, threatening policemen, by tax authorities who decide how much I can spend and save, by society wanting me to conform to their norms and practices ,by religious bodies, who take away my savings in the name of God and religion,to help the poor and needy, only this time they take from the needy to give the needy ,I am asked to record births, marriages and death in their register and pay the fees, even though the government does not acknowledge those registrations and ask for government registration ,for all this duplication of work ,cost me money and time and creates confusion in my mind,I try very hard to satisfy so many masters, does’nt this still make me a slave in a free Independent country,I think it does ,only this time matters are worse,I am a slave with too many masters and an empty belly,I have the freedom of speech but no energy to do so, I have the constitution to support my rights, but no money to ensure them,I am a slave in a free country.
